As we all know, even the best things must eventually come to an end. Yet, for Battery 2030+, this is not truly an ending. Rather, it is the beginning of a new chapter as our work continues under the newly established Coordination and Support Action (CSA) BATT-BRIDGE.
It is impossible to fully capture in a few words what Battery 2030+ has meant for the European battery community. Since its launch, the initiative has brought together leading researchers, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and societal actors with a common ambition: to position Europe as a global leader in sustainable battery innovation.
Looking back from 2026, we can clearly see the impact. Together, we have created a strategic and aligned European battery ecosystem. We have fostered collaboration across the entire value chain, built stronger connections between academia, research institutes, industry, and policymakers, and established a vibrant community dedicated to advancing battery technologies for a sustainable future.
Every person reading this has contributed to that success. Whether through research, innovation, collaboration, communication, or support, you have been instrumental in shaping the Battery 2030+ journey. That is something we can all be proud of.
There is naturally a touch of sadness as this chapter closes. But alongside that feeling comes a tremendous sense of achievement. The legacy of Battery 2030+ is not limited to the launch of CSA BATT-BRIDGE. It lives on in the projects we initiated, the partnerships we created, the roadmaps we developed, and the momentum we generated across Europe and beyond.
Driving Europe’s Battery Future
Battery 2030+ was established as a large-scale, long-term European research initiative with a vision to accelerate the development of sustainable, safe, high-performance batteries. The initiative has played a key role in supporting Europe’s ambition to build a competitive battery industry, based on clean energy, circular economy principles, and technological excellence.
Aligned with the objectives of the European Green Deal, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the European Battery Alliance, and the Strategic Energy Technology Plan, Battery 2030+ has brought together the most important stakeholders in battery research and development to address some of the industry’s most pressing challenges.
Through its strategic roadmap and portfolio of research projects, Battery 2030+ has helped transform the way batteries are designed, developed, manufactured, and recycled in Europe. The initiative’s first phase ran from 2020 to 2023, followed by a second phase of projects running through 2023 and 2026.
Key Achievements and Ambitions
Throughout its lifetime, Battery 2030+ has pursued ambitious goals to:
- Invent ultra-high-performance batteries that are safe, affordable, sustainable, and durable.
- Develop entirely new battery chemistries and concepts.
- Deliver breakthrough technologies for the European battery industry across the value chain, including manufacturing and recycling.
- Accelerate battery innovation through digitalization, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced modeling tools.
- Strengthen Europe’s long-term leadership in transportation, stationary energy storage, robotics, aerospace, medical technologies, and the Internet of Things.
These ambitions have not only advanced scientific knowledge but have also laid the foundation for a stronger and more competitive European battery ecosystem.
The Journey Continues with BATT-BRIDGE
While Battery 2030+ as an initiative is reaching its conclusion, its mission remains very much alive. CSA BATT-BRIDGE will build upon the knowledge, networks, and achievements created over the past years, ensuring that the community continues to collaborate, innovate, and drive Europe’s battery agenda forward.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all current and former projects, partners, stakeholders, and community members who have contributed to making Battery 2030+ such a remarkable success.
The journey continues. If you have not already joined the BATT-BRIDGE Community, we warmly invite you to do so. Stay connected, stay charged, and stay powerful.
We look forward to meeting you somewhere along the road toward an increasingly electrified, sustainable, and battery-powered society.
