Europe’s Battery Future Takes the Spotlight with the Launch of RAW MATTERS

At a time when batteries are powering Europe’s transition toward a carbon-neutral future, a new voice is entering the conversation, informed, inclusive, bold and global. The RAW MATTERS Podcast has officially launched, bringing critical raw materials and sustainable battery innovation to the forefront of public debate.

Developed by the KU Leuven Institute of Sustainable Metals and Minerals (SIM² KU Leuven), RAW MATTERS dives deep into the steps needed for the technologies of tomorrow – from electric vehicles to renewable energy storage.

🔋 Batteries are not just components,  they are the backbone of the energy transition, enabling cleaner transport, stabilizing power grids, and supporting industries from aerospace to digital technologies.

Yet behind every battery lies a critical question: where do the raw materials come from, and at what cost?

As Europe strives to build a competitive, sustainable battery industry, supported by BATTERY 2030+, the need for resilient and responsible raw material supply chains has never been more urgent.

What RAW MATTERS Brings to the Table?

Hosted by Peter Tom Jones (Director of SIM² KU Leuven) and Julia Poliscanova (Senior Director for Electric Vehicles & Batteries at Transport & Environment), the podcast brings together leading voices from across Academia, Industry, Policymaking, Civil society (including environmental movements and trade unions).

Together, they tackle one of the defining challenges of our time:
how to build sustainable, ethical, and diversified raw materials systems in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
