Battery 2030+ workshop on recycling March 6th 2025 – afternoon Young Scientist’s hackathon
In the frame of BATTERY2030+ activities, we are organizing a workshop on recycling within the training activities for Battery 2030.
The workshop will be exclusively online. A morning of presentations and round table discussions is planned involving academia, research centers and companies, with emphasis on projects funded under the umbrella of B2030+. For all young scientists you are welcome to join in to an innovative hackathon in the afternoon based on recycling!
This workshop and hackathon is free of charge and supported by the Battery 2030+ initiative and it’s projects.
Workshop Agenda
Morning: Educational and Informative Session
9:30 – 9:45 | Opening and Welcome by Silvia and Gwen
9:45 – 10:45 | Session 1: : Innovations in Recycling and Material Recovery Techniques (chair Silvia)
•Presentation by an expert from a project focused on new recycling Marcel Meeus (20 minutes)
•Presentation by a company Umicore (10 minutes) •Presentation by a company Stena (10 minutes) •Presentation by a company Kyburz (10 minutes)
•Interaction: Brief poll on the most relevant topics or questions by the audience
10:45 – 11:15 | Session 2 Overview of European Projects on Battery Recycling (chair Gwen)
•Presentation of 2 or 3 significant European projects focused on battery recycling (15’ each) : RENOVATE (Eliana Quartarone), ReUSE (Andreas Flegler)
•Interaction: Q&A session with the audience
•Presentation by an expert from a project focused on new recycling
•Interaction: Brief poll on the most relevant topics or questions by the audience
11:15 – 11:45 | Break
11:45 – 12:30 | Round Table Discussion (chair Gwen or Eliana?)
Theme: Future perspectives and challenges in battery recycling. Justo Garcia (Orano) – Respect Project and Hydrometallurgy
Afternoon: Interactive Activity -Hackathon Express
13:30 – 13:45 | Introduction to the Hackathon Express
•Explanation of the activity’s theme and objectives: each group will develop a creative solution to a specific battery recycling challenge. (define which depending on the morning presentations
13:45 – 15:15 | Team Working Session
•Participants are split into small teams (4-5 people), each assigned a specific theme (e.g., “Strategies for Waste Reduction in Recycling” or “Technologies for Lithium and Cobalt Recovery» direct recycling…..).
•Each group prepares a brief solution proposal, using a virtual whiteboard to share ideas and concepts.
15:30 – 16:15 | Solution Presentations
•Each group presents their idea to the audience.
•16:15 – 16:30 | Voting session
•a panel of experts vote on the most innovative solutions.
16:30 | Closing Remarks and Reflections
•Announcement of the winning group and closing reflections from the expert
