STELLAR

Safe, Sustainable, and High-Throughput Production of Reliable Lithium Metal Anodes for Gen 4B/4C/5 Batteries

STELLAR is driving Europe’s next leap in advanced battery manufacturing.

By uniting leading industrial and research partners, STELLAR accelerates the sustainable and scalable production of lithium metal anodes — a critical component for next-generation solid-state and lithium-sulfur batteries.

The project develops a breakthrough roll-to-roll manufacturing process that combines high throughput, precision, and industrial competitiveness. Demonstrated at pilot scale (TRL 7), STELLAR bridges innovation and market deployment, strengthening Europe’s battery value chain.

Through advanced inline monitoring, AI-driven quality control, and a data-powered digital twin, STELLAR ensures smarter, more efficient production. Driven by a circular economy strategy to enhance material recovery and recycling reduces environmental impact.

The result: stronger European manufacturing capacity, enhanced sustainability, and greater global competitiveness in in advanced battery technologies.

What We Aim to Achieve:

By 2030, STELLAR aims to secure Europe’s leadership in sustainable lithium metal anode manufacturing for next-generation batteries.

  • High Energy Density: Deliver ultra-high-purity (~99.9%), dense lithium metal anodes with precisely controlled thickness (5–15 µm ±10%) to enable Gen 4b/4c and Gen 5 battery performance.
  • Enhanced Safety & Stability: Integrate optimized in situ protective coatings to improve electrochemical stability and operational reliability in lithium metal–based cells.
  • Cost-Competitive Production: Deploy and validate an efficient roll-to-roll (R2R) PVD process, demonstrating a scalable proof-of-concept capacity of ~60 km/year.
  • Sustainable Life Cycle: Establish a resource-efficient manufacturing pathway that reduces material consumption, supports recyclability, and lowers environmental impact across the battery life cycle.

Collaboration and Impact
The consortium behind STELLAR is led by AVESTA, with a network of European partners specializing in battery technology, materials, equipment, digital systems, sustainability, and research. Several academic and research institutions ensure a robust collaboration that combines technical expertise with industrial leadership. The project spans 48 months, with clear goals for innovation in both technology and market integration, aiming to position Europe as a global leader in battery manufacturing and sustainability.
