Batteries – modernising EU rules

The European Commission has opened its online consultation to comment on the modernisation of EU battery rules. It is possible to give feedback until 9 July.

EU law aims to minimise batteries’ harmful effects on the environment. The rules cover their full life cycle, from design and production to reuse and recycling.

In line with the Green Deal and other sustainability-related policies, this initiative would update EU rules to ensure:

• all batteries are produced sustainably (i.e. with low resource consumption and little waste generated) and can be easily recycled

• any batteries used in the growing market for electric vehicles are sustainable

Feedback will be taken into account for further development and fine tuning of the initiative.

Feedback period: 28 May 2020 - 09 July 2020  (midnight Brussels time)
